Points: 3 (Essential)
QM Alignment: 4.1, 4.2
Overview
In line with standards 2.3, 4.1, 5.1, 6.1 and 9.1, your course content should align with your module learning objectives. See standard 2.3 for more information about alignment. Instructional materials selected should contribute to the achievement of stated learning objectives/competencies. Resources should be presented in a variety of formats to provide students with accessible options for consuming content which supports individual learning preferences.
Tips
- Use a variety of materials and types of materials (text, video, etc.), ensuring they are accessible (section 10 of the quality rubric) and aligned with your module learning objectives (standard 2.3).
- Consider using free and easily accessible learning materials and textbooks when feasible. By saving students money and reducing access hurdles, open educational resources (OER) have been shown to increase student success and equity. See this handout on open educational resources and open textbooks.
Common Issues
- Solely using textbook or publisher site for content in course
- Uploading PowerPoints but no videos or associated guidance/quizzes/discussion activities. Consider recording and sharing videos to go along with your PowerPoints.
- Instructional materials are not accessible (section 10 of the quality rubric).
Examples
A mix of instructional materials might consist of:
- An OER textbook, graphic organizers, and websites
- Journal articles, videos and narrated instructor created PowerPoints
- Publisher textbook, case studies and podcasts
