H5P

H5P is a free and open source tool for creating interactive content that runs in the browser and integrates with Canvas, as well as WordPress (and Pressbooks). There are dozens of interactive widgets available, including drag and drop quizzes, interactive video, interactive presentations, branching scenarios, and more. There are 3 versions available. #3 is recommended for instructors:

  1. h5p.org is the open-source version that you can use for testing out or installing on your own server (we have it installed on our Pressbooks e-book authoring site). The h5p.org site is meant only for testing, not for authoring real course activities.
  2. hccflcitt.h5p.com is a pro version that integrates with Canvas and the gradebook, however only CITT staff have paid access to author/create content in that version, and
  3. Lumi is a free third party site and desktop app that can be used by instructors to author and host interactive H5P course activities. You can embed ungraded H5P activities from here in your Canvas course (tutorials).

If you as an instructor would like to use an H5P widget in a Canvas course that integrates with the gradebook, you could author it on the Lumi site (or our Pressbooks site), and then email cittfacdev@hccfl.edu to copy and import it into the pro version and embed it into your course.

You also don’t have to author interactive content from scratch. There are numerous repositories and examples of openly-licensed H5P content, including:

You can also export H5P widgets to the SCORM format (which can be imported into Canvas or Workday Learning) using Lumi Deskop. Here is a video tutorial.
