Laboratory Preparation & Procedure

Materials:

• Molecular modeling kit
• periodic table

Safety:

No hazardous chemicals are involved. Handle the modeling kit carefully and responsibly.

Procedure:

1. Draw the Lewis structure for each molecule listed below. Record all data in the corresponding table in your lab notebook.

• CH₄
• SiH₄
• H₃O⁺
• NCl₃
• PO₄^3-
• CS₂
• N₂
• HF
• NO₂^–
• ^–OH

2. Build a model using the modeling kit based on your Lewis structure.

3. Sketch your model in your lab notebook showing all relative orientations.

4. Identify and record for each molecule:

• Systematic Name
• Approximate bond angle(s)
• Electron pair geometry
• Molecular geometry

5. Repeat for all listed molecules.
