Required Materials for this Course

Required Materials for this course include:

  1. Introductory Chemistry Lab Manual
  2. Scientific or Graphing Calculator
  3. Graph Paper (if not included in your lab notebook)
  4. Lab Coat
  5. Lab Notebook

General Requirements for keeping a lab notebook –

  • Permanently Bound Notebook:

    • Use a composition-style notebook with bound pages (not loose-leaf or spiral-bound). The composition-style notebook can include one with or without graphing paper.
    • No tearing out pages.
  •  Ink Only:

    • Write in pen (blue or black only), not pencil. This ensures that notes are permanent and tamper-proof.
  • Numbered Pages:

    • If pages are not pre-numbered, number them yourself in the top corner.
  • Table of Contents:

    • Reserve the first few pages for a Table of Contents.
    • Update it with the title and page number of each experiment as you go.
  • Labs:

    • All labs should be recorded in chronological order as they were performed
    • Title: All labs should have a descriptive title.
    • Date: All labs should include a date when the experiment was conducted.
    • Objective: All labs should include a goal or statement of purpose.
    • Safety Hazards: All labs should identify safety hazards present in that lab.
    • Materials: All labs should include an updated list of materials. Please note, some labs will remove items during lab time. Please make sure changes are included with a strikethrough.
    • Procedure: All labs should include a descriptive procedure that would allow it to be replicated by a student.
    • Data: All labs should include raw data (measurements & observations collected during class time), tables, graphs, & qualitative observations
    • Calculations: All labs should include at least required calculations performed during or after an experiment.
    • Post lab: All labs should include answers to the post lab questions & corrections where necessary based on lab feedback. Questions need to be numbered but not rewritten.
